SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH CENTRE
Introduction
Established on 11th October 1975, the Social Sciences Research Centre (SSRC) was conceived primarily to impart greater scientific vigour to research activities and promote interdisciplinary perspective particularly in the realm of Social Sciences. The decades of 1965-75 had witnessed considerable strides by individual departments in the modernization of curriculum and proliferation of empirical research including social surveys and field studies; but mostly with individual initiatives and, therefore, lacking an institutional base. It was logical, therefore, that the void be filled with the setting up of the Centre. The task was facilitated by the UGC with a modest grant of Rs. 2.00 lakhs for 5th plan period.
The onerous responsibility of initial planning and development of the Centre was carried on by Prof. Iqbal Narain who was appointed its founder - Director. Prof. Iqbal Narain, himself was devoted to empirical research specially in the areas of Panchayati Raj, Rural Elite, General Election, etc., the topics of vital importance to the nation. He was instrumental in obtaining UGC assistance and carrying on some survey works. After him, there have been the following directors whose tenure is given below:-

Objectives
It was increasingly realized by the concerned circles that individual social science disciplines were developing in isolation in such a way permitting limited interaction among the faculty members in various departments in the sharing of knowledge and comprehending emergent trends in wider perspectives. Hence, there is a need of building a common forum for such academic exchanges on a systematic basis. With this perspective in mind, the Social Sciences Research Centre aimed at:
- Inviting scholars whose academic pursuits have an interdisciplinary orientation and in whose visit, more than one department may feel interested.
- Arranging symposia and seminars around interdisciplinary themes with the help of academic community spread over different disciplines.
- Encouraging publications of interdisciplinary character.
- Providing for general and computer based foundational courses in research methodology in Social Sciences.
- Procuring of research material in terms of books, periodicals, micro-films etc. which would be of use from an interdisciplinary point of view.
- Acting as a service agency for common facilities, both mechanical and human, in regard to data processing, data analysis, typing, cyclostyling, photocopying, computer etc.
- Establishing contacts with institutions which are either engaged in the pursuit of interdisciplinary research or its funding.
- Encouraging, above all, inter-disciplinary studies and research directly through relevant project work.
- Providing reading room facilities to the faculty and scholars.
Mode of Functioning
The Social Sciences Research Centre usually prefers to work in collaboration with at least one and if possible with more than one department belonging to the faculty of Social Sciences. Joint auspices has thus become the key note of its functional approach whereby it is possible for the Centre to bring the different Social Sciences Department on a common platform and make them work together. However, the Centre also undertakes several activities on its own. As listed below, it had organized discussion programmes and conducted surveys to highlight critical aspects having bearing on the society.
Funding
Initially, the Social Sciences Research Centre had a grant of Rs. 2.00 lakhs from UGC for the entire Fifth Five Year Plan period providing for academic staff, equipment, visiting Professorship/Fellowships, books, Journals, seminars and also for empirical research progarammes. After the Fifth plan period little amount was sanctioned by the UGC. Thus, since 1981, the Social Sciences Research Centre is functioning on the bare minimum grant under head -contingency-. Initially, it was Rs. 8,500/- provided by the University for making the usual routine as well as special programmes based expenditures. Now it is enhanced upto Rs. 30-35 thousands per annum. In the Seventh Plan period some specific proposals were forwarded to the UGC for financial assistance but nothing was heard in this regard.

Present Status and Achievements
In collaboration with various departments and on its own, the SSRC during its 34 years tenure has organized numerous national level seminars, symposia, workshops and lectures in which it obtained the cooperation and participation of the scholars of national and international repute. The SSRC has also conducted research projects in collaboration with the Departments of Sociology, Political Science etc.
Recent Activities in the Centre
- - TUESDAYS WITH SSRC - Initiated from 10th November, 2009 between 1.00 to 2.00 PM
Research Discussion Forum to Promote Interdisciplinary Discussion
Proposed Course of Action for Future
In addition to organizing interdisciplinary seminars, symposia and lectures, keeping in tune with its objectives, the Centre is looking forward to include the following also under its programmes in future:-
- (i) Publication of an interdisciplinary research Journal.
- (ii) Undertaking of medium/short term projects and publishing research monograph.
- (iii) Organizing, on continuing basis, academic programmes specifically addressed to the task of Indianizing the Social Sciences.
- (iv) Organizing research methodology workshops and refresher courses for the benefit of researchers and teachers.
- (v) To develop an advanced programme for research on social, economic and political aspects of Rajasthan keeping in view of the characteristics of developing societies including India.
- (vi) Arranging fellowships to scholars for undertaking studies in the Centre.
- (vii) To solicit cooperation and form a liaison with the agencies/scholars engaged in professions other than the academic world but working in areas of interest to social scientists.
- (viii) Developing a reference library on Social Sciences including Research Metods.
- (ix) Building library resources (Particularly organizing reference and documentation services).
- (x) Commencing some P.G. Diploma Courses.
- (xi) To have a separate programme for Training and Research in Panchayati Raj and Rural Development.
It may be sincerely confessed that the Centre is hardly equipped or oriented to undertake work on most of the programmes proposed above even in modest way. Still they are noted here if only to show what a performing SSRC should be and that specifically aggregated efforts should be made to that end. There are already some better performing Role models which may also be studies.
Immediate Requirements/ Proposals
While the requirements mentioned above may need long while pursuit as well as comprehensive resolve on the part of the University/Government, certain activities/proposals which can be undertaken with modest resources to give the centre a semblance of functioning entity, may be considered on a priority basis. Among others, these are:
- (i) Library services: It is proposed that the Centre be permitted to run Prof. Iqbal Narain Memorial Library for specialized services to keep up the memory of its founder director and an eminent social scientist otherwise also. Efforts should also be made to procure Ph.D. and M.Phil. dissertation from relevant quarters.
- (ii) Grant of some research scholarships/ fellowships to promote work on socio-political-economic problems.
- (iii) Assignments of some funds from UGC unassigned grants (at least) for minor projects.
- (iv) Posting of some more research associates in the Centre.
- (v) Allotment of one additional room for library/reading room purpose.
- (vi) Organizing of special courses in research methodology for research candidates/ new supervisors.
- (vii) Organization of seminars focusing on themes of interdisciplinary nature.
