Established in 1950 under the headship of Dr. M.L. Sharma, this oldest Department of the University acquired its present form as "The Department of Hisoty & Indian Culture" undr the Headship of Tagore Professor Dr. G.C. Pande in 1962. Snce then the nature of the Department changed considerably emphasuzubg on the study of the Hisoty of the History of Ideas and Movements. Different specialized courses such as Philosophy of Hisotyr, Historiography, History of science ad Technology, Economic History, Social and Religious Ideas, History of Buddhism and Jainism, Political movements, Major Revolutions, History of China, Japan, Bussia and America and studis in regional history especially History of Rajasthan were introduced. Such an alternative approach towards the history paid its dividened as with the passage of time two advanced centres the centre for Jain Studies and the Centre for the Rajasthan Studies were crystallized to function independently. Recently Shri Guru Govind Singh Centre for Sikh Studies started functioning in the Department.
Further, we are the only Department of History in the whole Rajasthan where the papers like Philosophy of Hisotry and Historiography, Archaeology, Hisotry of Science and Technology, History of Art, Numismatics and Paleography are geing offered to students.
At present there are 96 research scholars pursuing their Ph.D. degree. Out of them 44 are receiving various scholarships; 16 JRF, 11 SRF, 10 ICHR Junior fellowship, 02 ICHR Senior fellowship, 04 Departmental scholarship and 03 Tagore fellowship. Here I will like to point out that out of 25 aspirants for Ph.D. course registered in January, 2004, 10 are availing UGC JRF. Similarly, out of 15 M. Phil students admitted in this session 03 are availing UGC JRF. A noticeable feature of this Department is that every year minimum 02 students receive University followship from 05 fellowship allotted to Social Science faculty by competing with all research scholars of Social Science faculty.
This is possible due to the dedicated and efficient staff members. 90% of the staff is engaged in guiding the research. Sharing room with the colleagues, our staff members devote about 6 hours a week in counseling and advising the students and researchers. The Department is actively using additional teaching aids like UGC lectures through TV-VCR, maps and diagrams besides class room lectures. The Department is equipped with its rich Raghuvanshi Memorial Library (4000 books approx), Museum with various artifacts and required paraphernalia for archeological studies and 3 computers.
The Department publishes a research journal Jijnasa annually. Already, few years back the Department has published 13 volumes of History of India.
The Department with its composite nature teaches besides about mentioned specialized courses the three periods of Indian History-Ancient, Medieval and Modern in the Under graduate, Post-graduate, Diploma in Indian Culture, M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. At present the faculty comprises of 24 teachers; 19 Associate Professor and 5 Assistant Professor.
