About Department

The Department of Economics, which started teaching in 1949, is the oldest Department of the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The Department imparts teaching for M.A. and M.Phil. examinations and also prepares the students for Ph.D degrees. Each year, about 275 students are admitted in the Postgraduate courses and 15 students for M.Phil. In addition to PG courses, the Department is associated with the teaching at the undergraduate level at the three constitutents colleges, viz., Univ. Maharajas College for Science, Univ. Rajasthan College for Arts and Univ. Maharanis College for girls.

About 1000 students are admitted for the undergraduate classes in these colleges in Economics included in both the faculties, viz., Faculty of Science and Faculty of Social Science. The paper was introduced at the B.Sc. level in 1991 alongwith Physics, Mathematics and Statistics and proved to be popular among the students of the faculty of Science.

The Department has so far awarded Ph.D to about 100 students and M.Phil to about 100 students during the last decade. The department provides leadership to all the 300 Government in the whole State affiliated to the University of Rajasthan and also to hose which are affiliated to other Universities in Rajasthan.

The Department has distinguised itself in academic and other activities. It has the privilege of having associated itself with eminent economists of both national and international repute such as Late Prof. M.V. Mathur, Late Dr. D.L. Gupta, Late. Prof. Raj Krishna, Prof. R.J. Chelliah, Prof., G.S. Bhalla, Dr. C. Rangarajan and many other distinguished scholars. The alumni of the Department includes economists like Prof. Y.K. Alagh, Dr. Ramesh Bhatia, Dr. Arvind pangariya of the World Bank. Many of the students of the Department have joined administration and economics administration serving various departments within and outside the State.

The Department has a strong faculty or 18 teachers sharing the teaching of various papers at the M.Phil. M.A., B.A. (Honous), B.A. (Pass) and B.Sc. (Pass) levels. Faculty and their specialisation is as follows.
